In 1827, Fort King (located in Ocala; a city in Marion County) was constructed as a buffer between the Seminole and whites settling in the area. It sat at the nexus of a network of military roads

From the fort one could easily travel to Fort Brooks (near Orange Springs), Fort McCoy, a fort at the St. Johns River which became Astor, Palatka, Jacksonville and Fort Brooke (on Tampa Bay) just to name a few. Fort King was the distribution point in Central Florida from which all settlers gathered supplies and received mail. Many other forts sprang up in the area eventually becoming Florida townships and cities in Marion County. Florida Government offered 160 acres to new settlers to build homes, log cabins and the dense land was quickly cleared by farmers for agriculture and pastures. Marion County was particularly known for it’s agricultural products and free range cattle. During the Civil War Florida provided vast supplies of beef and leather goods to the Confederate army most of which came from the Central Florida area including cities in Marion County FL. Orange Springs itself was instrumental and converted a 1852 church to a hospital to tend to wounded Civil War soldiers. Citizens in Marion County communities were rumored to have gathered to make cannon balls and musket balls sent by way of the Ocklawaha and St. Johns rivers to confederate troops. After the war Florida’s towns continued to grow with the expansion of railroad systems, growth of the citrus industry and turpentine industries. The Townsend House (circa 1912) is still standing and is registered with Florida’s historical registry and the Orange Springs Church just to name a few landmarks.
