- Farm products can be readily transported via six deepwater ports located in Western Washington.
- Central Washington is desert but sophisticated irrigation systems have transformed it into the most productive agricultural land in the state. Almost half of the farms are irrigated.
- Soils vary from rich loam in valleys to desert sand. Rich soil developed over millions of years of volcanoes, glaciers, floods, and winds.
- The state has several climate zones. Near the Pacific Ocean, the Maritime climate zone results in cooler summers and warmer winters. In the Olympic Mountains, rainfall is 140 inches. The central part of the state is a Desert climate zone and rainfall is less than 10 inches. Most of the eastern part of the state is in the Steppe climate zone (hot summers, cold winters) with 10 to 20 inches of rain per year.
