Covering 8.5 million acres or about a third of the state's total land, there are 47,000 farms in Virginia. 2. In 2007, corn for grain generated $101.1 million in sales. Grain feeds poultry, equine, dairy, and cattle.
3. Tobacco is the No. 3 cash crop.
4. Tomatoes are the fourth leading cash crop and rank fourth nationally.
5. Winter wheat with a value of $65.0 million came in No. 5. The wheat is ground to flour and is used in animal feed.
6. In 2007, hay harvest brought in $44.3 million. It is important to the livestock industry.

How do animal products compare? Broiler chickens are the most valuable agricultural product. In 2007, poultry farms produced 250 million broilers worth over $559.4 million, ranking the state No. 9 in national broiler production. Beef is the No. 2 leading commodity, valued at $429.9 million in 2007. Milk from 98,000 dairy cows ranked No. 3 with $371.7 million in sales. No. 4 is turkey production with 22 million head valued at $298.6 million. In addition, the state is known for its hams and pork products, especially hams produced in the town of Smithfield.
