Soils forming in loamy glacial till are good for agricultural and forestry purposes. Forests draw thousands of visitors during the autumn to see fall foliage changing colors between the end of September and mid October every year. Beginning with the Tun-bridge Soil Series, the official State Soil, the state offers a wide variety of soils. The most fertile land is on the west near Lake Champlain and in the east in the Connecticut River Valley. The hilly areas are perfect for hay production.
Four mountain ranges cluster in the Green Mountain State. The Green Mountain ridge bisects the state and the Appalachian, Hoosac, and Taconic are also present. Mount Mansfield (4,393 feet above sea level) is the highest peak.
Founded in 1791 as the fourteenth state in the Union, Vermont is now home to over 600,000. Its State Bird is the Hermit thrush, State Tree the Sugar Maple, State Flower the Red Clover. The capital is Montpelier, the smallest capital in the nation with less than 9,000 people. Burlington (pop. 40,000) is the largest city.
