Agriculture is the state's leading industry with a $19 billion impact on the state's economy. The climate and soils serve
South Dakota farmlands well. Due to climatic differences, topsoil ranges from 10-12 inches thick in the east to 5-7 inches thick in the western part of the state. Soil scientists have identified over 650 different soil types in South Dakota and the rare Houdek is the official state soil. With natural irrigation of 14-25 inches of rainfall and 25-100 inches of snow and temperatures ranging from 10 to 96 degrees throughout the state, many crops thrive, including wheat, corn, soybeans, and sunflowers.
In 2000, there were 31,500 farms in South Dakota with an average size of 1,392 acres. Forty-four million acres of farms included over 16 million acres of harvested cropland.

The state ranks in the top 10 for the production of 25 agricultural commodities. Farmers plant over three million acres of produce hard red winter, hard red spring and durum annually. Over four million acres of corn are planted, mostly southeast of the Missouri River, and 400 million bushels are harvested every year. In addition, corn is processed into ethanol fuel and distillers grain.

Soybeans are planted on about four million acres, which produce 100 million bushels annually. A large processing plant in Volga SD transforms the harvest into meal and oil. The state ranks high for the production of oilseed and confectionery sunflowers and for a variety of small grains including oats, barley, rye, flaxseed, sorghum and alfalfa.
In addition, approximately 17,000 ranchers and cattlemen produce 3.7 million head of cattle; the overwhelming majority is family businesses. Pork farmers raise over 2.3 million hogs annually. The pork industry, including John Morrell & Co. processing 17,000 hogs a day, provides nearly 7,000 jobs.

South Dakota is home to approximately 760,000 residents. Pierre is the state capital and Sioux Falls is the largest city with a population of 148,000. The State Animal is the Coyote, State Fish the Walleye, State Bird the Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasant, State Tree the Black Hills Spruce, and the State Flower is Pasque. Well known for the presidential carvings on Mount Rushmore, the state is also popular for "Sturgis", an annual Motorcycle Rally started by the Jackpine Gypsies in 1938 that provides considerable tourist revenues.
