Although the total Nevada real estate spans 110,567 square miles, the federal government owns 85 percent of the land.  The terrain is mostly mountains and sagebrush-covered desert.  However, residents of Nevada homes number approximately 2.7 million.   Las Vegas is the largest city (pop. 567,641) and the most visited.

In a rural state where agriculture is one of the most important industries, Nevada farmlands total 5.8 million acres.  There are over 3,100 farms averaging 1,873 acres each.  Mining is another important industry in the Silver State.  In 1859, miners discovered Comstock Lode, the richest silver node found to date in the U.S.A.

Range livestock production leads all other agricultural industries.  Most cattle and sheep operations lie in the northern half of the state.  The No. 1 enterprise is cow-calf operations, followed by dairy, sheep and lambs, and hogs.  Crops include alfalfa hay processed into compressed bales and cubes, alfalfa seed, potatoes, barley, wheat, rye, oats, vegetables, mint, garlic, onions, and limited fruits.

Orovada soil is the State Soil.  Average rainfall is 7 inches per year, making Nevada the driest state in the nation.  The driest portions of the state receive only 4 inches of rain annually but the wettest regions receives 40 inches.
