In 2003, there were 28,000 Montana farms averaging 2,146 acres each. Although the government owns a third of the land, it also leases large portions to farmers and ranchers for crops and livestock production.
What crops rank in the top ten when compared with the 50 states? In 2003, Montana croplands ranked as follows:
No. 2 Durum wheat (14.5 million bushels)
No. 3 Spring wheat (60.5 million bushels)
No. 3 Barley (34 million bushels)
No. 6 Sugar beets (1.3 million hundredweight)
No. 3 Garbanzo beans (150,000 hundredweight)
No. 4 Lentils (273,000 hundredweight)
No. 4 Dry edible peas (452,000 hundredweight)
No. 2 Flaxseed (221,000 bushels)
No. 8 Pinto beans (209,000 hundredweight)
Capitalizing on the agricultural sector, residents have added large food processing industries that add value to the farm products. For example, the state harvests 5,400 acres of wheat annually. Raw wheat may be worth $3.67 per bushel. However, ground into flour it brings $15 per bushel and baking the flour into bread raises the value to $111 per bushel.
