Forest Land in Maine
|
Endowed with rich forestland, there are 39 species of commercial tree species in Maine's forests. In contrast, most other major timber producing regions depend on a few species for most of their production. Maine's outputs account for half of the production in northern New England and New York.
There is a demand for every tree. Over 50,000 jobs facilitate over $4 billion that comes to the state from forestland production. Outputs range from veneers to maple syrup to Christmas wreaths. Somerset County produces more maple syrup than any county in the nation. With over 200 sawmills, the state ranks No. 2 in the nation for paper production. It is also the No. 1 exporter of blueberries and the largest producer of toothpicks. The plant operated by Strong Wood Products, Inc. produces 20 million toothpicks every day!
