Iowa features over 30 million acres of farmland in the Midwestern United States. Following only California and Texas in value of yearly farm output, Iowa farms are the most productive in the nation. There are 92,600 farms with an average size of 333 acres.
Often referred to as the "Food Capital of the World," Iowa is part of the Corn Belt. The agriculture-based economy began in the 1800s after the Louisiana Purchase. Main agricultural outputs are hogs, corn, soybeans, oats, cattle, and dairy products. As of January 2010, Iowa is home to 3.85 million cattle, 19.2 million hogs and pigs, and 210,000 sheep. Approximately 215,000 milk cows produce an average of 20,367 pounds of milk annually.
Food processing plants serve these and other industries. In 2010, the state is producing more ethanol fuel than any other U.S. state and hosting wind farms and green energy production.
