The historic building in the scenic Town of McIntosh nestles into the northern climes of Marion County. Hundred-year-old live oak trees punctuate the Victorian-style streets lined with cracker homes. Friendly quiet neighborhoods are hallmarks of the peaceful community. Named after a squatter and original settler, McIntosh was founded in 1913 and features many older buildings.
Several events in McIntosh draw visitors to experience its bountiful country charm. One is the annual 1890s Festival. A fundraiser by the Friends of McIntosh, the Festival started in 1974 called the McIntosh Gay Nineties Festival attended by 4,000 people. Bake sales, dinners and other events brought in some of the funds needed to purchase, move, and restore the old McIntosh train depot.
In 2010, the Festival hosted over 250 vendors and drew 35,000 visitors. Friends of McIntosh raise money for projects a front porch on the Community Center, playground equipment. The event helped install Victorian-style lampposts in Van Ness Park downtown, a clock in the mini-park, and the purchase of the old Carriage House next to the depot. In addition, Friends of McIntosh funds scholarships for local and area young people and donates to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Scouts, Emergency Assistance Fund, and American Heart Association.
During December every year, the Friends hold a decorating contest between residents and business owners. "Light Up McIntosh" began in 1993 and has since transformed the holiday landscape. Friday afternoon Farmers Markets provide fresh ingredients and nice company on a regular basis.
