Fernandina Beach Amelia Island Historical Attributes
Native American bands of Timucuan settled on Napoyca, now the Amelia Islands, about a thousand years ago. Explorer Jean Ribault named the gorgeous site Isle de Mai, claiming for France in 1562. A few years later, Spanish forces drove the French out of the region and claimed it for Spain. For about a hundred years, the Spanish Franciscans kept a mission on what was then called Isla de Santa Maria.
In 1702, the British-Indian invaded and renamed the island in honor of Princess Amelia, the daughter of King George. As part of the Treaty of Paris, the island returned to Spanish rule. The American flag has flown over the area since March 3, 1862.
